Historic Montford Neighborhood

Montford covers over 300 acres, with over six hundred structures, most built between 1890 and 1920. The neighborhood began in 1889 and was taken over by developer George Willis Pack, a lumber tycoon from the midwest who moved to Asheville in 1885. He is best know as a philanthropist and benefactor of the town’s library and principal public square. He also donated land for Montford Park on the North end of Montford Avenue.
Montford is popularly called a “Victorian” neighborhood, but actually has many architectural styles, with influences from Bruce Price, Bernard Maybeck, Frank Lloyd Wright and English Architect Richard Sharp Smith, supervising architect for the Biltmore House.
There are Greek Revival style, like the Rankin House, Montfords oldest home, Queen Anne style, and many which have gambrel roofs, hipped gables, peppledash or stucco walls, heavy porch brackets indicitive of simple Colonial revival details.
